MARIPOSA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
ENGLISH:
40 credits required. Four years of English courses.
MATHEMATICS:
20 credits required. All students shall meet or exceed the rigor of the content standards of Geometry.
Example #1: Algebra 1a, 1b freshman year plus Geometry 1a, 1b sophomore year.
Example #2: Geometry 1a, 1b freshman year plus Algebra 2a, 2b sophomore year.
If your student passed Algebra I or Geometry in Middle School, two years of a higher level math will still be required for graduation.(Ed Code 51224.5) Example, Geometry and Algebra II. Retaking Algebra 1 or Geometry in High School after passing it in 8th grade will not count towards the graduation requirement. Placement will be determined by the course successfully completed during 8th grade.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
30 credits required.
World History A, B
United States History A, B
Civics and Economics
DRIVER’S EDUCATION / INFORMATION LITERACY:
5 credits, one semester required.
HEALTH A or HEALTH B:
5 credits required. Health A includes the unit on sex education. Parents/Guardians must select their choice on the registration forms for the Health requirement.
FINE ARTS:
10 credits required. Art, Ceramics, Chorus, Instrumental Music, Drama, ROP Multi-media.
SCIENCE:
30 credits required. One year of physical science, one year of biological science and one year of elective science.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
30 credits or three years required.
CAREER TECH:
20 credits required or one full year.
For MCHS students who will not be completing UC/CSU requirements at graduation. Students are required to take an ROP class during their junior and/or senior year. Students may choose to take work experience in lieu of the ROP requirement if the student can find an appropriate placement.
ELECTIVES:
Electives to bring total credits to at least 220 credits (number may vary depending on how many PE, career tech, and/or fine art units are taken.
CAHSEE:
Students must pass the California High School Exit Exam prior to graduation.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE:
A cumulative GPA of 2.0+ is required for MCHS Graduation.
NOTE: Students enrolled in a Mariposa County Unified School: County Community High School, Sierra Home School, Jessie Benton Fremont School, Coulterville High School or Yosemite Park High School, who are planning to graduate from Mariposa County High School must complete their entire senior year at Mariposa County High School. Exception: A student who successfully completes the CHSPE (California High School Proficiency Exam) during 11th or 12th grade and wants to walk at graduation with their class must complete all course work through the fall term of 12th grade and show completion of at least six units of community college work during the spring semester of their senior year. Students under this exception will be able to participate in MCHS graduation ceremonies but will not receive a MCHS diploma.
